David J. Rau, MD

About Dr. Rau

Dr. Rau has spent his entire life in Houma, Louisiana. After attending grammar school and Vandebilt Catholic High School, he then pursued undergraduate studies at Nicholls State University. While attending Nicholls during the day, Dr. Rau worked nights at TGMC’s Emergency department as an orderly. In 1979, he began medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. In 1984, he was accepted into the LSU Surgery Residency Program, where he was fortunate to gain vast experience in trauma, in addition to general surgical training. Dr. Rau also was fortunate enough to be accepted into a six month vascular research program. His training was completed in 1989 after serving as chief resident in surgery and receiving outstanding resident of the year, 4 out of his 5 years in training.

He returned to his beloved Terrebonne Parish in 1989 and happily joined his brother, Dr. Fritz Rau, and his partner, Dr. Philip Cenac, in their surgical practice. Working with a surgical pioneer such as Dr. Phillip Cenac was especially rewarding and left a permanent mark on how he practices medicine.

He is married to the former Margaret Picou, daughter of the late Mayor Conrad Picou, for the last 36 years. They have 2 daughters, both of who are in the medical field, and 3 sons. Dr. Rau spends his spare time cooking for the family and when possible for various groups.
