Types of Imaging

Digital Radiography (X-ray)

All x-ray equipment is digital, allowing for near-instant image viewing. This technology enables technologists to adjust image contrast and brightness without re-exposing the patient, improving efficiency and reducing radiation exposure. Digital imaging systems are used throughout the facility. Portable digital X-ray units also enable images of critically ill patients to be obtained directly at the bedside, improving access to imaging in emergency and intensive care settings.

Cat Scan (CT)MRI Machine

Terrebonne General offers state-of-the-art CT (Cat Scan) technology, featuring the GE Revolution Frontier and Revolution HD scanners. Both systems are equipped with advanced software options designed to enhance imaging performance, patient comfort, and diagnostic quality, including:

  • Faster scanning for trauma and emergency cases
  • Reduced need for breath-holds during imaging
  • Calming scenery videos to promote relaxation
  • Instructional videos to guide patients through the scan process
  • Noise reduction technology for a quieter experience
  • Lower radiation dose protocols for improved patient safety
  • Metal artifact reduction for clearer imaging results

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI machineTerrebonne General offers a state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Caring MR Suite® Imaging Area. The hospital continues to enhance the quality of the patient experience. The world-class MRI suite will feature a GE Optima MR450w 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. This imaging system particularly benefits those who need procedures, including MR angiography, neurological/brain imaging, spine studies, orthopedic studies, and abdominal imaging. Terrebonne General’s high-definition technology improves imaging speed and quality.

The advanced technology of the MRI offers:

  • Clearer images
  • Better patient comfort
  • Noise reduction
  • Larger open feel
  • Patient choice of color scheme, music, and video content

Ultrasound (US)

Terrebonne General’s ultrasound units can produce 3D images for a clear view of any suspicious area in a woman’s body. Ultrasounds do not use radiation and can be used to scan the pelvis, thyroid, or other parts of the body to look for abnormalities. These cutting-edge imaging machines can provide images of a developing baby or help doctors diagnose cysts and tumors with incredible accuracy.

Nuclear Medicine (NM)

Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive material (called tracers) to help diagnose, monitor, and sometimes treat different diseases. Unlike traditional imaging, it focuses on how organs and tissues function, even at the cellular level.

Depending on the type of test, the procedure can take anywhere from about 30 minutes to several hours. The tracer may be introduced into the body in different ways, such as through an injection, ingestion, or inhalation. Once the tracer reaches the targeted area, a technologist captures images to evaluate how the organ or tissue is working.

Positron Emission Technology/Computed Technology (PET CT)

A PET/CT scan combines two imaging methods, PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computed tomography), to provide detailed information about both the structure and function of the body.

During the exam, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the patient. After the injection, there is a 45-minute waiting period to allow the tracer to travel through the body and be absorbed by tissues. Once ready, the patient lies still while images are taken.

PET/CT scans are commonly used to detect, stage, and monitor cancer. Areas of high activity, such as cancer cells, may appear as “hot spots” on the images. The scan can also help doctors determine how well treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy are working.
